Kitchen Remodeling Trends That Are Becoming Outdated in 2021

Written by Bobbie Guthrie | Aug. 10, 2021

There's just nothing like walking into a beautifully renovated, fully updated kitchen. It presents you with an air of satisfaction. In many ways, the kitchen is the heart of the house. Holiday meals are prepared here. Morning breakfasts before big work meetings and school presentations originate here. From early morning coffee to those midnight snacks, the kitchen is truly a centerpiece of the house. It's also a major selling point. When you have an updated kitchen it instantly sets your home above the competition. People are envious of your kitchen and, therefore, the house. It also adds value to your property, making it a natural starting point for any kind of renovation.

But what kind of kitchen hardware trends are starting to fade? There are plenty of possible upgrades that many people look at like it's going out of style. The last thing you want to do is pump money into an upgrade that will turn heads away and scrunch noses in disgust. So, if you're considering any kind of new kitchen renovation, here are remodeling trends that are becoming outdated.

Pot Racks

Remember the first time you saw a hanging pot rack over an island? Didn't you marvel at how easy it was to grab a pot? There wasn't any need to go fishing for the pots under the cabinet. Problem is, with hanging pot racks your kitchen instantly looks cluttered. It's like a chandelier of mismatched, scorched metal. While helpful in theory, in practice it's not a great upgrade, which is why this trend is starting to fall by the wayside. By removing it, the entire room opens up.

The Distressed Look

For a while the distressed look started to make its way into kitchens everywhere. This was especially the case regarding kitchen cabinets. It gave a stylized, lived-in look that many found desirable. However, that look is now outdated. In fact, it instantly ages your kitchen, and that's the last thing you want to do. Much like the over-island pot rack, this is a look you'll want to avoid during your kitchen renovation.

Appliance Garage

Some appliances don't look all that great sitting on the counter top. It takes away from the streamlined look of your counter. To hide certain appliances many kitchen renovations came with an appliance garage. Basically it's a cabinet that holds appliances and has a pull-down "garage" style door. This is a now outdated look as it is easier to simply place unused appliances in a large cabinet instead of taking up valuable countertop space with the appliance garage.

Fake Finishes

Chances are you've been in a kitchen that has a strange, fake paint finish applied to it. It's the look of someone trying to replicate the paint and aging of a house in the American Southwest, but instead of letting the temperature, build material, and kind of paint create the texture, the fake finish is made up of one undertone paint and then a secondary color applied over top, usually with a sponge, so it has some transparency to it. If you're considering that kind of look, stop right there. It is an especially outdated kitchen look, and while it is easy enough to paint over it, creating the fake finish in the first place takes a long time and can eat up your budget.

Bright Appliances

Bright ranges and fridges tend to come around every few decades. After years of white, black, and silver, the sudden pop of color can be a breath of fresh air. However, the time of colored, bright appliances is coming to an end. So while what you grab might work well now, in another year or two it will be outdated, which forces you to purchase either a new appliance or have it painted (which in itself can be hit-and-miss). So skip the bright appliance look.

Kitchen Counter Desk

Maybe it's part of the kitchen counter, or maybe it's part of the kitchen island, but it seemed to make sense to have a built-in desk right here. After all, you basically have a table already. Here's the thing though. Do you really want your kid using bright markers on the stone countertop? And wouldn't you rather have more storage space instead of the legroom of a desk? Move the desk to the actual office and keep the kitchen free of this outdated trend.
